Top 10 Family Friendly Campgrounds in Colorado

family camping at sun outdoors rocky mountains

Colorado offers some of the most stunning natural landscapes and outdoor adventures for family camping enthusiasts. When it comes to finding the perfect place for your family to connect with nature, you’ll discover a wealth of options among the best family campgrounds in Colorado. From private RV resorts with modern amenities to state parks that showcase the state’s diverse beauty, there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re looking to explore the majestic Rocky Mountains, unwind by a pristine lake, or immerse yourself in the rich history of the region, Colorado’s family campgrounds provide a wide range of experiences for all ages. Get ready for unforgettable moments, starry nights, and quality time spent together in the heart of the Centennial State.

As parents ourselves, we know what’s important for a successful family camping trip.

  1. CLEAN BATHROOMS – so important for tent campers who rely on clean, well-maintained bathrooms and showers! Even if you have a bathroom with your RV, its essential to have nice bathrooms when you are out and about exploring the parks.

  2. KIDS’ AREAS & ACTIVITIES. While it isn’t essential to have organized activities for children, they are nice to have as an option.  In addition – playgrounds and kid-friendly hiking trails are a must. (If this is your first time taking the kids camping, we suggest starting with this quick read)

  3. CAMPSITE PRIVACY. No one wants to drive a couple hours from home with all their camping gear to just be crammed into a campsite practically on top of their neighbors!  We know we aren’t exactly back-packing into the wilderness, but bonus points for those campsites who have a measure of privacy so you can at least pretend you are miles away from society.

With these criteria in mind, here is our suggested list of best campgrounds for families — sorted geographically WEST to EAST.

  1. Morefield Campground in Mesa Verde National Park, CO
  2. Ridgeway State Park in Ridgeway, CO
  3. Rifle Falls State Park in Rifle, CO
  4. Mountain Views at River Edge RV Resort in Creede, CO
  5. Fun Valley Family Resort in South Fork, CO
  6. Molly Brown Campground in Leadville, CO
  7. Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountains in Granby, CO
  8. YMCA of the Rockies Estes Park Center in Estes Park, CO
  9. Jellystone Park at Larkspur in Larkspur, CO
  10. Garden of the Gods RV Resort in Colorado Springs, CO

If you’ve never been to Mesa Verde National Park – add it to your MUST VISIT bucket list immediately. This park is absolutely amazing and perfect for families with children of all ages. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has over 5,000 archeological sites including 600 cliff dwellings. If your family is into trekking, we really suggest this blogpost by EarthTrekkers to show you all the different best hikes to take to visit the cliff dwellings.

Moorfield campground is 4 miles from the park entrance and is a quiet, well-run campground with spaced-out campsites. Kids really love the Explorer Scavenger Hunt that the campground hosts. There are mixed reviews on the WiFi – when its working its great, but that’s only when its up and running… The bathrooms with showers are clean and in good working order (and free). Campsites do not have concrete pads – so bring a RV Patio mat like this one to keep the dirt down.

If you need more to do than hiking, you can had over to the McPhee Reservoir (right across from the entrance to Mesa Verde Park). You can boat, fish, swim, and paddleboard. There are also local wineries, restaurants, and brewpubs if you tire of hotdogs over the campfire.

Hailed as the ‘Switzerland of America”, Ridgeway State Park is one of Colorado’s most beautiful recreational areas (and that’s saying something – because Colorado has a LOT of great parks!). Here are just some of the plethora of activities that families can enjoy together: 14 miles of well-maintained biking trails, birdwatching the 140 species of migratory and resident birds. Blue Heron Marina offers a great swimming beach. At Ridgeway Reservoir there is boating and fishing (and there is NO bag or possession limit for the smallmouth bass fishing – catch ‘em all if you can!). There is also hiking trails, horseback riding trail, Geocaching, and all sorts of educational programs like the Agents of Discover and Junior Ranger. At the Park Visitors Center you can borrow fishing poles & tackle, snow shoes (children and adult sizes), and family activity backpacks. Everything is available FREE for loan.

The 3 campgrounds on the park are the perfect spot to hang out after a full day of activities. The lush surroundings will be a peaceful and quiet retreat while the kids enjoy hanging out. There are clean restrooms as well as a nice laundromat. There are several ADA campsites which can be booked for anyone who needs a more accessible site.

5775 Highway 325

Rifle, CO

map of rifle falls

Rifle Falls State Park might not have the biggest campground, but its small size is the perfect family camping destination. The campsites have lots of trees and its only about a 5 minute walk over to the famous TRIPLE WATERFALLS. The campground is well maintained, full of wildlife, and campsites are spaced out far enough for privacy and quiet. The trails throughout the park are easy enough for most children – although you must be careful if its raining because they can get slippery and some have steep drop-offs. You ARE allowed to bring dogs on the trails, but they must be on leash. The only drawback to this amazing park is that its so fantastic that it can get very busy in the summer. If you aren’t having luck making reservations for a weekend – try getting something for the weekdays – those days can be less busy.

If you are looking for a camping experience that is totally aimed at bringing the family together for some good old fashioned FUN – take a look at Fun Family Resort. There are a variety of campsites – some better than others (check the map) but they accommodate all kinds of tents and RVs. In addition – if you wanted to give campers a try – they rent out travel trailers already on their own campsites. You can also stay in one of their cabins or even in the motel they have onsite. Keep in mind – this is more like a summer camp – not the Ritz Carlton – so come prepared with your own linens and camping equipment!

For fun – take your pick: mini golf, tubing on the Rio Grande (with shuttle back up river), biking, hiking, fishing in any of the stocked ponds, or cruising around on a paddle boat. Most activities can be purchased ala carte, or you can purchase all-day passes that even include fishing permits. After a day of fun in the sun and water, your little ones will be ready to hang out by your campfire and enjoy some ghost stories before bed.

Molly Brown Campground

Turquoise Lake Rd

Leadville, CO

719-486-0749

map of molly brown

Right on the shores of Turquoise Lake near Leadville, CO you’ll find the Molly Brown Campground. It’s the perfect small campground for families who love water sports like fishing, canoeing, and water skiing. There are also some nice hikes – an easy 1.2-mile nature trail that meanders through the forest down to Turquois Lake shore. This trail also connects to the more robust 6.4 mile Turquoise Lake Trail that runs along the shoreline from the dam up to May Queen Campground.

The elevation of Molly Brown is 9885 feet – which means oxygen is a little thin. The bathrooms are clean and well maintained. The campsites are flat and include a picnic table and fire ring/grill. The campsites do have a lot of dust and gravel, so bring an outdoor rug like this for either in front of your tent or on the side of your RV. It will really keep the debris down.

If your idea of camping is more resort-ish – full amenities, lots of activities, restaurants, and planned events the family will love Sun Outdoors in the Rocky Mountains. You can choose how you’d like to camp as well – everything from a normal full-hook up RV site to rentable Airstream trailers, cabins, covered wagon cabins, or entire lodges. Whatever you choose – you will NOT be roughing it. This resort is about glamping – camping in style and luxury. Sun Outdoors is basically a fabulous resort that you happen to be camping at.

The resort itself is full of activities for the entire family. The swimming pool and hot tubs are open seasonally, there is a mini bowling alley, gem mining, and super nice sports courts (tennis, bocce ball, playgrounds, basketball, and more). There is a bar & grill restaurant as well as a tavern at the resort in case you are tired of roasting hot dogs for dinner every night. Nearby is Lake Granby which has fishing and boating, Sombrero stables, and in the winter is Winter Park Resort (22.6 miles away) – which has every winter activity you could want.

Estes Park, CO

Resort map

map of ymca of rockiesIf you aren’t a YMCA member yet, its time to join! YMCA has two Colorado mountain retreats: Estes Park Center and Snow Mountain Ranch. For our main recommendation, we’ll be focusing on the Estes Park retreat, but both of the resorts are fantastic family get-aways. You won’t be camping per se here – there are no campgrounds for tents or RVs – but they have 214 private cabins, 9 reunion cabins, and 9 hotel-style lodges. The wide variety of lodging options makes this location the perfect place for multi-family vacations and extended family reunions.

Once you arrive and get settled the biggest challenge you’ll face is deciding what you all want to do – because the options are endless! Axe throwing? Disc golf? Ice skating? Archery? Yep, yep, yep! There are also many free organized family activities and programs like Kickball, bingo, Gaga Ball, and more. Kids will find that the leaders of the games are inclusive, upbeat, and tons of fun.

Dining options include an all-you can eat buffet (open all 3 meals), a small café and grocery. If you are coming with a large group – you can have it catered.
